The Sint Janshospitaal (St. John’s Hospital) is a medieval building, where sick and needy people were taken care of. Medicine was still in its infancy, so the sick took refuge in all kinds of saints for their ailments. Ursula was called upon for a “good death”, Cornelius for pediatric diseases and Rochus against the plague. This results in a very diverse collection: paintings and statues of patron saints, functional objects such as cupboards, medical equipment and pharmacy pots and a unique ensemble of paintings made by Hans Memling, commissioned by the sisters and brothers of the Sint-Janshospitaal.
